Greetings from South L.A.

After only an hour-long tour of the museum, students scored better than their peers on evaluating artwork, and also had higher test scores for tolerance and empathy. The differences were even greater for rural, low-income, or minority students, many whom had never visited a museum before.
— Adele Peters, The scientific proof that exposing kids to art really matters

New places are always a joy, especially to kids. Field trips are a key component of school instruction; they broaden the educational experience and make a subject more relevant and engaging to both the educator and student. There is something valuable about learning something in the classroom and then experiencing it first hand out in the world.

A focus on arts integration and project-based learning teaches students to explore real-world problems and challenges. Active and engaged learning inspires students to obtain a deeper knowledge of the subjects our children are studying and allows them to see how ideas are connected, in the real world. Teaching within this context promotes collaboration, critical thinking and deepens knowledge retention. In other words, it makes learning fun because who really enjoys being indoors sitting all day?

Ideally, all educational experiences would be like that, however there's all these other restrictions educators may have to deal with such as; funding, emphasis on instructional minutes, testing etc.

However, I have a couple solutions:

South LA as a Resource

Let's face it, we live in amazing city! Los Angeles has so many wonderful opportunities and activities that are available. However, one doesn't always have to go out of their way because also, let's keep it real, getting anywhere in LA is a mission. So why not explore in our own backyards? South (Central) Los Angeles, has a rich cultural history. Our community is such a natural blend of different cultures and decades of folks who turn the very little they have into creative energies that we see all around us.

Check out this map, I've compiled of local arts organizations in the area. We don't have many, but the ones we do have are amazing.
